Tutorial: How to Add Fabric

There are 3 places that you can add fabric from;
The FIRST place is the Main menu, just tap the “add fabric” menu item.
The SECOND is from the stash browser, tap the “+” button on the top right.
The THIRD is from the block customiser, tap the “+” in the fabric wheel to the right.
When adding fabric you will be presented with the Add Fabric Screen.
To chose a fabric tap the camera icon to display the “Resize and Crop” page.
When the Resize and Crop screen is visible, select the Camera button on the top right and choose either;
“Photo Library” – A selection of images that you have added to your device will be available to choose from. Select an image to continue.
“Camera” – You can take a photo of your fabric and save to continue.
After selecting an image, you can use 2 fingers to pinch and pan the image to crop it to the desired size. We recommend that you use images as high quality as possible (512 pixels x 512 pixels recommended minimum) for the best Quiltography experience.
Should you want to chose a different image, just tap the camera icon again on the top right. Once you are once you are happy with your selection, pressing the “Add Fabric” button will confirm your selection and be taken back to the initial “Add Fabric” screen.
Quiltography automatically detects up to 5 of the top colours from your chosen fabric and tags the fabric entry to make it easy to find at a later date. The accuracy of the colour detection can vary depending on the quality of the image. If the detected colour is incorrect or you would like to provide a more accurate colour description, simply tap on the field to edit or remote the tag.
Quiltography offers a “Quick Tag” feature that tracks previous tags used in a given field and offers a suggestion to make tagging fields that bit quicker and easier. In the example below we have started naming the fabric we just selected, all name tags have been filtered based on what we have typed so far, selecting any Quick Tag will override the text in the current field.
We recommend that you add as much information as you can to make finding fabric easier later on down the line. Don’t worry if you can not complete all the fields for now, fabric details can be edited at a later date.
When you are done, tap “Save” on the top right and your fabric will be entered to your database.
To view your new fabric, from the main menu select, “View Stash” to be presented with a grid of all your fabric, including your most recent addition. Select any fabric from this page to display and edit details.

Thank you so much for that. Very helpful!
I will add more in time.
I am planning on photographing my small bit of sta stash and would like it to be somewhat close to the correct scale.
When photographing fabric with the iPad, can you recommend how far away you should be from the fabric to make the scale close to correct?
If using a camera, what lens length and distance from fabric will give a near correct scale?
So far, I really love this app!
Janice
Hi Janice, enabling accurate scale is not really an option on the iPad due to many technical reasons. Quiltography aims to give the best balance between function and usability, unfortunately some compromises need to be made. Depending on the number of blocks, how big you would want to make the block, size of pieces and other quilt options will dictate whether the pattern scale is close to accurate or not. If you usually create blocks that are 12″, the best thing you can do is photograph 12″ worth of fabric.
Thank you. Now I am excited about building my own quilt blocks.
I just started to design my first quilt using the app with a stack of fabrics I bought, all polka dots (!) for my daughter . It was great adding them to the stash, but why are there so many already in there?
Also, when I went to design the quilt, I couldn’t get the blocks to rotate. That menu didn’t come up on the left although it was mentioned in the tutorial.
Otherwise, I am really looking forward to using this, as a long time dressmaker but newbie quilter!
Hi Judy,
I emailed you directly, but, for others reading this post. The demo fabrics are for users to play with until they get around to adding their own, these can be ignored or deleted. Not sure what the problem is with the rotating of blocks, be sure to reply to my email if this is still causing problems so I can look into it for you.
Chris.
How do I delete a test block and a quilt I made?
Hi Anne, the videos on the site cover this in more detail than I can here. The principle is the same as deleting fabric.
I sent a message earlier today and found that my IPad was in backwards and was taking a picture of the iPad cover. Now adding to stash is a breeze,.
LOVE this app!
I am just learning to use this and was wondering if there is a way to edit a block I’ve created once it is saved, or do I have to start over? Also, when adding them to a quilt design, is there a way to customize the quilt design so all the blocks are not the same size? I am doing a BOM where the blocks are different sizes and fit together like a puzzle.
Not at the moment, but, these are challenges I intend to explore for future versions.
Database integrity prohibits editing blocks after they are made, I don’t want you to modify a block and accidentally changing another quilt. There is currently not a way to have asymmetrically sized blocks.
Is there a way to back up my stash from the iPad to a computer and/or to another
iPad? My daughter is using one iPad to design quilts for us and I am using another iPad and would like to be able to design as well and access the stash created on my daughter’s iPad.
This app is incredibly and so very easy to use! Perfect for us!
Thank you!
Elaine
There is currently not a way for backing up to share with others, but, if you use iCloud your stash will be backed up in case your iPad is lost or stolen.
I purchased your app yesterday and so far I feel it will be purfect for me. I do have a question about measurements. Is there a button I’m missing that can give me a scale of my designed quilt? I can’t tell what the sashing, borders or even the blocks measure out to be? I see that with the photo quilts you can print out a pattern, can you do this on the other quilts?
Sizing will be added in the next update.
Is it possible to add multiple borders?
Not explicitly, you can get the effect of multiple borders by using rail fences etc. in your border. It is something I plan to address down the line.
Just purchased and designed my first block. Is there any place for cutting directions or block size besides grid sheet? I need a 10″ block. Also when adding border is there any way to size border and add a second border?
Sizings are relative. Additional border options are planned, but, there are other features such as a fabric / yardage calculator that are taking priority.
This is great! Is there a way that I can organize the fabric by color or type? I would love the ability to look at my reds, purples, blues, etc.
If you tagged your fabrics by colour etc. Using the search bar and typing “red” will show only your red fabrics. There are some videos on this site to help with this.
I like the app but its missing two things, to be able to veiw blocks together and see how your quilt will look, also to be able to create a quilt with two different blocks
I am slightly confused as this is EXACTLY what the app provides the ability to do. Would you kindly elaborate on your comment to better understand your issues.
I love the app, but I would like to be able to have the app tell me the yardage for the quilts that I create.
As of version 1.3 this is now possible.
Hi….I love this app! Is there a limit on how many fabrics can be added to my stash? Thanks
Only limited by the free space remaining on your iPad.
